Young Interpreters & EAL

Our Young Interpreters are a group of friendly, confident and empathetic role models who are here to buddy up with new joiners, specifically those who have English as an additional language (EAL).
Joining a new school can be nerve wracking, especially if you are new to the language as well. Many of our interpreters speak another language themselves and can empathise with this feeling. They have been trained on how to help and offer support to their buddy. Our Young Interpreters and their buddies meet regularly to chat, play games and do crafts which helps to build a valuable support network for those who might need it.

What is English as an additional language (EAL)?

EAL stands for English as an additional language. It is a term used to describe children and young people where English may not be their first language. Our school community is wonderfully diverse, with many languages spoken and cultures represented. We feel it is vital to celebrate and champion our children who speak different languages and strive to ensure these children feel welcomed and supported throughout their time here.
